Students across the Black Country have taken part in interactive live sessions delivered by Aspire to HE, to get an exclusive insight into the world of higher education.
Over the past three weeks, 170 students from Aspire to HE’s partner schools, have taken part in online sessions that have been tailored to meet the needs of students through different stages of their educational journey. The interactive sessions included:
- An introduction to higher education (HE)
- Transition from Year 9 (Options and the importance of GCSEs)
- Social opportunities
- Making informed decisions
- Transition from Year 11 (Next Steps Post 16)
- Choosing the right course and university for you
- Student Finance
- Transition from Year 13 (Next steps into HE)
The information advice and guidance (IAG) sessions have become very popular with schools as the 60 minute sessions help the students to understand how and what they should be thinking about next on their educational journey; whether it’s understanding what their next steps will be e.g.; sixth form, college, apprenticeships or do they go into the ‘world of work’ or university or preparation for upcoming exams.
Aspire to HE’s sessions are also designed to give students an understanding and insight into university life, the benefits of attending university and the support and opportunities available.
Jay Jassal-Sandhu, Senior Programmes Officer at Aspire to HE aid: “We’ve had a busy few weeks delivering the virtual sessions and they’ve been extremely popular with students from all year groups.
“Our sessions provide students with the information, advice and guidance they need to understand the opportunities that are available so they feel confident to make decisions on their next steps to take on their educational journey.
“Although the past twelve months have been a challenge in moving to virtual sessions, we have been amazed with the level of interaction and enthusiasm received from the students.
“We’re always pleased to hear that we have made a difference and inspiring more students to progress to higher education.”
After taking part in the sessions, students said:
– “I wanted to go to university before this session but I wasn’t sure what I want to do, this session gave me a lot of information about what to do and it gave me an idea about what to expect going there.”
-“At first I was thinking about going to university but now I’m am glad to say I now really want to go and can’t wait to apply.”
-“I want to go to university, before this talk I was one the fence, and so with all the information and recommendations I have been given I’m convinced I want to do higher education.”
